RIALTO, California – March 11, 2022: Plant Prefab, the first Certified B Corporation™ building technology company dedicated to sustainable design, materials and operations, today announced the installation of a 2,354-square-foot private residence in Agoura Hills, California. The home was designed by Plant Prefab’s award-winning in-house design studio and custom prefabricated in the company’s Rialto, California factory as a combination of Plant Panels™ and Plant Modules™.

The California Modern style residence works in harmony with the property’s topography to maximize living space in a modest footprint. Carved into a scenic hillside overlooking Malibu, the lower level of the home is comprised of a two-vehicle carport leading to an entry hall, laundry room, artist’s studio and primary suite with private deck. Upstairs, an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area extend onto a large balcony and sunroom for indoor-outdoor living. The social gathering spaces are flanked by two guest rooms with shared access to the balcony and sunroom, providing abundant natural daylight, fresh air and views from every room in the home.

The project showcases the flexibility of the Plant Building System™, in which Plant Prefab CAD engineers collaborate with project design and site teams to determine the most efficient scope allocation between the factory and site general contractor. To maximize soil retention on the sloping lot, the first floor was constructed as a combination of site-built reinforced concrete walls and factory-built Plant Panels, which were delivered in February for installation around the concrete components. The second floor was prefabricated as three volumetric Plant Modules, which were delivered complete with interior finishes, fixtures and appliances. The coordinated approach kept trucking and on-site finish work to a minimum for cost control and schedule expediency.

Fire resiliency and energy performance were key considerations of the home’s design. A tight building assembly including a Class A roof prevents embers from penetrating the building envelope, while cement-based composite siding, high-performance glass and a sprinkler system provide additional fire resistance. Careful site planning and strategic door and window placement maximize cross-ventilation to reduce the need for air conditioning, and a large rooftop solar array will provide electricity for the home.

The design is modeled to outperform California Title 24 energy performance standards by over 10%, a key metric in Plant Prefab’s carbon footprint calculation. The company measures and includes such Scope 3 emissions in addition to the more commonly reported Scope 1 and 2 emissions from company operations. Plant Prefab was the first housing prefabricator to announce a net zero goal and has implemented carbon reduction initiatives and purchased offsets to achieve carbon-neutral operations since 2020.
