When our clients lost their beloved home to a wildfire, they enlisted the Plant Design Studio to help them design and build the home of their dreams.

Carved into a scenic hillside overlooking Malibu, a large carport leads to a private artist’s studio and spacious primary suite with walk-in closet and laundry room. Upstairs, an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area extend onto a large deck and sunroom for effortless indoor-outdoor living. Generous glazing frames tranquil views in all directions, utilizing high-performance glass for optimal thermal performance.

Concrete and steel framing were used for fire resiliency and soil retention on the sloping hillside, together with cement-based composite siding, a class A roof, and sprinkler system. Rooftop solar and a large generator facilitate off-grid living.

The home was custom-prefabricated in our Rialto, California factory as a combination of Plant Panels™ and Plant Modules™. The lower level of the home, built into the hillside, was produced as Plant Panels and delivered first for assembly around the site-built retaining wall. The main living area on the second level was produced as three finished Plant Modules™ and installed in a single day.
