RIALTO, California – September 22, 2021: Plant Prefab’s patented Plant Building System™ was honored in the 2021 Fast Company Innovation by Design Awards in the real estate category. The distinction recognizes the system’s advancement of residential construction through its design-forward engineering, process efficiency, and superior product performance.

Now in its tenth year, the Innovation by Design Awards honor the people, teams, and companies that transform businesses, organizations, and society through design. 2021 honorees include projects, products, and services in 37 categories, representing a cross section of blue-chip companies, startups, nonprofits, and emerging talent. Judges include renowned designers from a variety of disciplines, business leaders from some of the most innovative companies in the world, and Fast Company’s own writers and editors. Entries are judged on functionality, originality, beauty, sustainability, user insight, cultural impact, and business impact.

“Design is not just a beauty contest,” said Stephanie Mehta, editor-in-chief of Fast Company. “It’s something that can change the world and create solutions in a time when we face pressing global issues such as systemic racism, climate change, and a global pandemic. Many of these entries showcase these challenges while providing hope for the future through their steadfast commitment to elevate design.”

The Plant Building System tackles the nation’s crippling housing shortage, which has grown even more acute during the pandemic; according to federal mortgage corporation Freddie Mac, the United States is nearly four million homes short of demand. Supply chain disruptions, a dearth of skilled labor, and skyrocketing land costs have made it impossible for traditional builders to close the gap.

“Plant Prefab’s mission is to build a better world, by design, and the Plant Building System is helping us deliver on that mission by making it significantly easier, more efficient, and more sustainable to build high-quality, custom homes,” says Plant Prefab Founder & CEO Steve Glenn. “Our ability to address almost any design for any housing typology is critical for urban infill lots and other areas with restrictive zoning that requires custom architectural solutions.”

The Plant Building System provides the tools and technology to achieve maximum quality and efficiency from production, to delivery, installation, and finish. Plant Prefab CAD engineers work with project architects to help them optimize their plans for prefabrication, then create a complete virtual model of the project. The data model is used to determine the most efficient means of construction to meet the requirements of the unique project design, building lot, and local building code. Factory production of Plant Panels™ and Plant Modules™, customizable building components designed and patented by Plant Prefab, provides industry-leading quality controls, material efficiency, and product performance. The Plant Building System reduces the overall construction timeline by 20-50% and produces up to 30% less waste than on-site construction. Homes built using the Plant Building System perform an average 10-30% better than California Title 24 energy standards.

2021 Innovation by Design Award recipients are featured in the October print issue of Fast Company magazine, on newsstands September 28, 2021, and online at fastcompany.com/innovation-by-design/2021.
